Human attention is the bottleneck
Information is infinite. Attention is not.
Every day, we are exposed to more articles, products, places, messages, and ideas than we can possibly process in real time. Most of the time, our mind is simply not available. Not because the information is unimportant — but because context, energy, and timing are missing.
When the brain is overloaded, it defers.
This is not a productivity failure. It's a human one.
Screenshots are not a feature — they're a reflex
When people are not ready to decide, they offload.
They don't write notes. They don't create tasks. They don't organize folders.
They press two buttons.
A screenshot is the fastest possible way to say: "This matters, but not now."
It works everywhere, across every app, without thinking. It's a mechanical gesture — a human–machine reflex.
Screenshots are how people protect themselves from cognitive overload.
The idea for omemo was born from this exact moment: early in the morning, half asleep, not ready to read the news or process important information — so a screenshot becomes a promise to come back later, after coffee, when the mind is open.
This behavior is not edge‑case. It's universal.
Storage is not understanding
Today, screenshots are treated as images.
They are stored, indexed by date, and forgotten.
But a screenshot is not a photo of the past.
It's intent toward the future.
When a screenshot is captured, it loses everything that made it useful:
- The original link
- The surrounding context
- The reason it mattered
What remains is a dead pixel artifact — disconnected from the world it came from.

Taking the screenshot changes what we remember
Screenshots feel like memory. Research suggests they can also change memory.
A 2026 paper published in Memory & Cognition ran seven preregistered experiments comparing information people simply viewed with information they screenshotted. Across the experiments, participants consistently remembered the screenshotted material less well. In one experiment, they were also worse at remembering whether they had screenshotted an item in the first place.
The researchers do not claim that one mechanism fully explains the effect. Cognitive offloading — relying on an external store rather than our own memory — is one explanation explored in the research. Reduced attention to captured information may also play a role.
But the practical problem is simpler:
Once we hand something to the phone, the phone needs to be able to give it back.
Research on external memory makes the same point: information stored outside our own memory is only useful if we can later find where it was stored.

It does not necessarily preserve why you saved it, where it came from, or what you meant to do with it.

This pattern also appears in anonymized omemo usage data.
The average measured omemo user has 3,280 screenshots on their device. Only 0.4% of organized items are ever favorited, while 41% can be reconnected to a useful link.
Screenshots are not failing because people forgot to save something.
They succeeded at saving it — but the context, source and intention often became harder to retrieve.
